21 Jan Early Intervention
The early schooling years are a crucial time for a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). By encouraging the development of essential skills at an early age, we can help improve our child’s learning ability throughout his/her life
Early intervention for learners as young as 20 months is vital and includes elements such as:
- The identification of colours and understanding colours concepts
- Counting and Number recognition
- The ABC’s –sorting and identification
- Time concepts and the understanding of what time is and means
- Weather concepts and seasons
- Picture recognition such as family, friends, school, home and food choices. This is particularly important for learners that are not able to communicate
- Shapes, Jigsaw puzzle, problem solving & patience
- Turn taking
- Behaviour intervention
- Gross and fine motor development
- Listening skills
Effective early intervention programs are a vital first step for children with autism and other developmental delays and can go a long way in helping the child achieve their full potential. For many children the road will be a bumpy one and there will be times when their progress will be slow but parents need to realize the early intervention is the child’s best hope for the future.
