12 Feb Special Education Services
In many countries in the world “special education services” are clearly outlined to support children with disabilities. The services the child is eligible for is determined by the Individualized Educational Program (IEP) team.
In South Africa this is however not the case. Finding help for a child with a disability is very difficult and in some parts of South Africa outright impossible.
Disability Services are sorely lacking and most parents are forced to consult with private special educational institutions, therapy centres and medical offices to help their children get the special educational services they need.
What does special education services mean?
Special education services mean that instruction must be designed for an individual student! Thus each service or special therapy offered looks different for every child. There is not a “one-solution-fits-all” in special education.
Instruction can include academic instruction, social and behavioural skills, physical therapy, assistive technologies, therapeutic recreation, counselling services, speech-language services and so much more.
When doing your research, you may stumble across the term: inclusive education or inclusion. Inclusive education focuses on integrating and guaranteeing special educational needs of pupils with various forms of disabilities into mainstream schools.
